The right kind of family by Henriette Hellstern-Kjøller

Visual artist and lesbian Henriette Hellstern-Kjøller (Denmark) writes:
“The inspiration for this film came after a chat with a guy from Texas, in 2009 when I was in San Francisco. He felt that he didn’t need to learn about other cultures than the American, “as America has everything to offer”, he said.
Prior to this I had heard about an incident with the country band Dixie Chicks, which comes from Texas: When they declared a couple of years ago that they were sorry that they came from Texas, because that is where George Bush comes from, people started breaking their [Dixie Chicks] Cd’s at a big demonstration, and they let their children step on the music Cd’s.
This is the reason, why I have chosen to use music from Texas for the video, and I think that the state of Texas has still has far to go when it comes to equal rights and awareness of for example homosexuality. I have made a short song, where I ask what is a real family – homosexual/ heterosexual, and aren’t we at the end of the day very much alike? The video features a blinking image of a heterosexual family. It switches on and off on the mark of certain words. I have speeded up the music, so pay attention!”

Entzaubert Film Festival in Berlin

Three of Henriette’s videos: ‘Mrs. Uterus & me’, ‘Touch my tra la la’, and ‘The right kind of family’ (see above) has been selected for screening at the entzaubert festival in Berlin. The 4th entzaubert festival, July 1-4, is a no-commercial, radical queer film festival, – a platform for all those artists and filmmakers, who do not find places (easily) to show their work in the mainstream film industry. The screenings of the festival’s international programme will take place every day during the festival 17:00 – 24:00 at the queer wagenplatz, Schwarzer Kanal, Berlin, Germany. You can see Henriette’s videos on Saturday July 3, 2010.
