Transformers: portraits by Sadie Lee
art@ketchum pleon proudly presents ‘Transformers’, a series of powerful portraits by award-winning artist Sadie Lee [UK]. The exhibition features work from two of her recent shows: ‘And then He was a She – Paintings of Holly Woodlawn’, and ‘Pin Ups’.

‘And then He was a She – Paintings of Holly Woodlawn’ is a series of large-scale oil paintings of Holly Woodlawn, legendary Warhol Superstar drag queen and star of the Warhol films ‘Trash’ and ‘Women in Revolt’. Holly is perhaps best known as the character in the first verse of Lou Reed’s iconic hit ‘Walk on the Wild Side’. Funded by Arts Council England, The Drill Hall, London, queerupnorth and Salford City Council, and supported by Homotopia, the show premiered in Salford, then travelled to the Novas Gallery, Liverpool, The Drill Hall, London and was shown in Berlin at the Schwules Museum in 2010.

‘Pin Ups’ was first shown in 2011 in Liverpool as part of Homotopia’s annual arts festival. The collection of portraits is an homage to some of Lee’s favourite underground icons. These include legendary artist/performance artist David Hoyle; revered actress Rita Tushingham; promoter and photographer Stav Bee; figurative painter Matthew Stradling; artists’ model Frank Sweet and professional pin up Anderrida Shurville.

Original paintings and limited edition giclee prints will be available to buy throughout the exhibition, which runs from 27 Aug – 19 Oct 2012
