Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Herstory Gallery
December 12, 2014-July 12, 2015

For more than a decade, Brooklyn-based artist Chitra Ganesh has used the iconography of mythology, literature, and popular culture to bring to light feminist and queer narratives. In Chitra Ganesh: Eyes of Time, Ganesh explores ideas of femininity, empowerment, and multiplicity creating a site-specific mixed media installation that draws inspiration from the Brooklyn Museum’s encyclopedic collection.

In a monumental new mural, Ganesh takes Kali, the South Asian goddess of destruction and rebirth featured in Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, as a starting point for portraying female power and plurality. These themes are extended into artist-curated vitrines that showcase works from the Museum’s renowned Egyptian, Indian, and Contemporary Collections.

This exhibition is made possible with support from the Elizabeth A. Sackler Foundation. The exhibition is organized by Saisha Grayson, Assistant Curator, Elizabeth A.
