A Spotlight on China at the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival<\/h2>\n

The second edition of the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival <\/a>will take place in Antwerp from August 1 to 9\u00a0and\u00a0will turn its focus on\u00a0China. The festival will show the works of\u00a0Chinese artists and talk with Chinese\u00a0activists about sexuality and gender diversity.\u00a0Teaming up with Antwerp Pride, the\u00a0Antwerp Queer Arts\u00a0Festival is embedded in the local community. \u2018Our festival is inspired by the world, without forgetting\u00a0our\u00a0neighbours.<\/p>\n

The festival\u00a0opens with a Chinese art exhibition. \u2018Queer Arts in China\u2019<\/a>, will bring works from numerous Chinese artists to a\u00a0Belgian audience.<\/p>\n

China Today<\/h2>\n

\u2018How do people talk about being gay or being transgender in other continents. How do other cultures deal with gender identity? These are some of\u00a0the\u00a0fundamental questions of\u00a0our festival. This summer we will be focusing on China. We\u00a0will take a look at\u00a0how Chinese art presents\u00a0the Chinese way of dealing with different forms of sexual identities. Therefore we invited several key\u00a0Chinese artists and activists. The people behind the Antwerp Pride are joining us by putting a human rights debat on the agenda,\u2019 says Marcia Poelman from the Antwerp Queer Arts\u00a0Festival.<\/p>\n

\u2018Because contemporary China links the past, the present and the future, we believe it will be a most interesting encounter,\u2019 Poelman continues.<\/p>\n

Exchange: that is the Antwerp Queer Festival\u2019s central theme. \u2018Antwerp will be a hotspot this summer for artists from various\u00a0art forms\u00a0like film, literature, photography, and theatre. This all within the context of fascinating differences between the west and the east and a vibrant neighborhood.\u2019<\/p>\n

Community based Festival<\/h2>\n

You will find our festival at different locations in the central station quarter, a\u00a0neighbourhood better known as Chinatown. It also\u00a0used to be the Antwerp\u00a0gay district. The Belgian artist Jan Fabre lives in this part of Antwerp. With his famous monologue \u201cDrugs kept me alive\u201d he will be a part of the festival. \u2018We are very happy to announce that Fabre and his theatre company Troubleyn are joining\u00a0the festival. We are aiming at a large audience. Therefore this multicultural part of Antwerp seems to be right up our alley,\u2019 Poelman states.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0De Coninckplein is another place to be. The 7th of August it will be the centre of performances, music, food\u00a0and debat.
\nThe alternative cinema \u2018Cartoons\u2019 will be showing some excellent Chinese and Asian queer films. Also on the program is literature, a sculpture expo and documentaries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
