Initially studying sculpture, she mixed with the American avant-garde and in 1921 switched to photography as assistant to Man Ray in his Paris studio. Within three years she had opened her own studio in Paris, France. Many of her sitters lived openly with their homosexuality. Berenice lived with her partner, art critic Elizabeth McCausland (1899\u20131965) in New York for 30 years. After McCausland&#8217;s death in 1965, Berenice moved to Maine where she died in 1991.<\/p>\n<p><em>[The copyright of the video above remains with the original holder and it is used here for the
