Dunye is a queer fimmaker. Her work often concerns themes of race, sexuality and gender, particularly issues relating to black lesbians. She made the film <em>The Watermelon Woman<\/em> in 1996 and directed the television movie <em>Strangers Inside<\/em> based on the experiences of African-American lesbians in prison in 2001.
