Queer Art On Facebook

The social network site Facebook is one of the places to look for lesbian/ queer artists and arts professionals.

Queer marketers have started publishing facebook ‘groups’ and ‘fan pages’ for their events. And subsequently they publish ‘facebook events’ i.e. the viral invitations of queer art festivals, exhibitions, etc. This is all very cool, but there is one flaw about Facebook and that is that you need to have your own profile in order to log on and read the details…which not all people can be bothered to do.

If you are the happy owner of your own facebook profile, you can use facebook to get in contact with arts professionals, curators, artists, performers, etc. Just send them a facebook-email. There is no need to invite them to be your friend before you write to them. Wait to invite them to be your friends until you actually know, if you share the same interests.

Facebook have recently opened for some of their pages to be indexed in Google, which makes the queer art pages on Facebook more visible, but for some reason not all Facebook pages are indexable and that is not cool! And some of the queer facebook pages have very long (!) user unfriendly urls. Shame on Facebook! They should do better than that.

Below you can find some samples of queer arts festivals, which have pages on Facebook. Don’t expect to find elaborate web galleries on these queer pages as Facebook hijacks the copyright of all things uploaded to the social network site. This fact makes marketers and artists less willing to upload fine art works to the site.

Queer Arts Pages on Facebook
You can find organizations such as:

Edmonton Exposure Festival, Canada
Homotopia Festival, Liverpool, UK
Sheffield’s annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Arts Festival in UK
Glasgay! Festival in Scotland, UK
Queer Up North, Manchester’s international queer festival, theatre, music, comedy and cabaret

at Facebook. Even though Facebook has its flaws, it is a great site for getting connected with queer people.
