The Photographer and Her Self-portrait Pre-1930

Lesbians have probably used the camera since it was invented in the 1830’ies. I have found some links to a few old self-portraits, which I want to share with Feminine Moments’ readers:

Emma Jane Gay (1830-1919) with her back to the viewer
Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) smoking, drinking and showing her petticoat
Claude Cahun (1894-1954) a sexy gender bending dyke.

These photos are fine examples of the strong visual language of independent women pre-1930 and they show the big transformation of the visual language of the lesbian photographer that took place between 1830 and 1930.
