MEET THE ARTIST
Meet Aurora Reinhard at the exhibition on Sunday March 25, 1-3pm at SHOWROOM HELSINKI, Helsinki, Finland.

Aurora Reinhard is known for her controversial work exploring the tensions and structures of contemporary society – in particular our obsessive representations of gender and female sexuality. In her new solo exhibition Perfect Reinhard plays with the addictive, accelerating mannerisms that she sees predominating in commercial definitions of gender.

With Perfect, Reinhard presents new work, including photography and craft-intensive sculpture, which is not a departure from – but rather a continuum of – her established oeuvre. She significantly expands on the fetish-based and surrealist approaches she has worked with in recent years. By including both detailed sculptures and quite haunting photographs she develops a richly multi-layered statement, giving painstaking attention to the prevailing, escapist maneuvers. Instead of settling for Freudian slips or righteous ideologies, Reinhard advances a bold statement questioning the widespread acceptance and condescendence to a female role determined by commercialized society and conducted by its members.

Aurora Reinhard (b. 1975, lives and works in Helsinki) works with video, photography and hyper-realistic objects fetishizing the everyday. Reinhard holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. Her works are internationally renowned, with exhibitions at the Shedhalle, Zürich; Fridericianum, Kassel; Ludwig Museum, Cologne and Platform Garanti, Istanbul. Her experimental documentary Boygirl (2002) won the International media art award from ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany.

The Exhibition is open
March 4 – April 8, 2012 Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-7pm, Sundays 12-4pm. Meet Aurora Reinhard at the exhibition on Sunday March 25, 1-3pm.

Karin Michalski: "Pasche & Sofia" (2003). 21'
‘Pasche and Sofia’ is a documentary filmed in a small village in Albania. Pasche is a so-called ‘sworn virgin’(South Slavic tobelija or tybelí, ostajnica “she who stays” or muskobanja “man-like woman”; Albanian virgjineshtë), which refers to a traditional social role in the highlands of Albania and Montenegro. ‘Sworn virgin’ is a female-born person who takes on the social (but not sexual) role of a man. They dress, work and live as men, but remain chaste and unmarried. Sofia and other villagers are interviewed about how they understand and accept Pasche.

Aurora Reinhard: "Boygirl" (2002),12' & "Female" (2003), 25'
Boygirl (2002) is a documentary based on interviews of three young females that all more or less look like boys. The girls tell how does it feel to construct one´s own identity without a clear forebild, how do they define their gender and how other people perceive them.
Female (2003) is a documentary about three extraordinary persons: Kia, Julia and Tiina who tell their story, a story of survival. They are male to female transsexual women. The idea of somebody having experienced life both as male and female was very striking for me. How does it feel to be suddenly a woman after being a male for 30 years? Were these women ever really men?

Finish artist Aurora Reinhard’s latest exhibition “Teaser” opened last weekend at Tallinn City Gallery, Harju St. 13, Tallinn, Estonia. The exhibition features video, photo series and an installation. Teaser focuses on female fetish and the mechanisms of sexuality, everyday mythology, desire and economics that are related thereto.

Aurora Reinhard has since the end of the 90′ies worked with issues about gender, female identity and the marginalization of women, lesbians and other social groups. The press release about “Teaser” reads:

“She [Aurora] does not accuse the oh-so-horrible male-centered chauvinist world of everything, but rather demonstrates how women themselves have happily participated and surrender themselves to sexually charged power games. Reinhard demonstrates that the relationship is not simple and one-sided – with one side the victim and the other the “sadist” – but that women themselves have made sexuality an instrument in inter-gender games.”

The exhibition is open from March 28th to April 12th 2009, Mon-Sun, 12 noon to 6 pm. at the Tallinn City Gallery, Estonia.
