SANE, exhibition poster by Anne Bentley, Australia
The Albion Street Gallery invites you to the opening of Anne Bentley’s solo show SANE on Friday June 25, 2010, 6-9pm at The Albion Street Gallery, 105 Albion Street, Surry Hills, Sydney, Australia. The exhibition extends until 23 July Tue-Sat 11-5.
Photographer, artist and lesbian Anne Bentley has been showing her photographic works for six years and this is her fifth solo show in Sydney. SANE features a portfolio of collages/ photomontages. Collage is a new medium for Anne, but she masters the technique with ease and the images show her sense of amusement and her independent view of the world.
Get off the fucking roof (page one)!, Lambda print 47x36xm, by Anne Bentley
SANE began as accidental therapy to counteract relentless building work going on around and on top of her inner west workroom. ‘I was already playing around with some collages, but the frustration and noise was so aggravating that I stopped one afternoon and thought, ‘Right you lot – Take This!’ and the images just leapt into the work. I titled it just how I felt: Get Off The Fucking Roof!’
Anne is reflecting on the interplay between (wo)man and our relationship to animals and machines. Her images look like rebuses, but we miss the code. We don’t know which language the rebuses are designed for, and as viewers we have to rely on our sense of the archetypes, the collectively inherited unconscious idea of what iconography similar to Anne’s represents. This is contemporary art with nerve and humor.
