Australian artist Deborah Kelly’s Religion “Creation”
Video (27:50): Australian artist Deborah Kelly about the creative process of creating your own queer sci fi religion and the performances.
Why would you create a new religion? In 2020, Australian artist Deborah Kelly began pondering that question. She was filled with grief over the Black Summer bushfires, and wanted something to believe in. Soon, her new religion, “Creation”, was born. It was grounded in queer inclusion, science fiction and climate change activism, and started somewhat as a parody. Deborah Kelly reasoned that if Donald Trump could “get elected as a president of the United States, then I can found my own religion”. But soon, Creation became more than a joke, artwork or emblem of activism. It attracted people from diverse backgrounds who’d felt marginalised or rejected by mainstream religion. And together, they created a community that offered real spiritual solace. – ABC Australia
