Homosexuality was heavily frowned upon in the UK at the beginning of the 20th century. For men, it was illegal and, for women, it was invisible. Queer artist Gluck (1895-1978) became a notable artist of this period despite wearing male clothes and having female loves, while being considered a woman by their contemporaries.
