The Flip Side: When Sex is Not Okay… Art Gallery Night!

Press release via the Queeruption e-mail list

A night of artwork, zines, performances, and activities, about not-okay experiences with sex (and some food goodies too!)

Friday July 22nd, 2011: 7pm – 11pm.
at Lambeth Women’s Project
166a Stockwell Rd
London SW9 9QT, UK

Lots of people have had not-okay sexual experiences. We’ve felt unsafe or threatened during sex. We’ve had experiences of sexual abuse or assault. We’ve felt dirty or ashamed during sex, had flashbacks, or disassociated.

We are perpetually encouraged to stay silent about our experiences, even though we have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. This night is for us, by us. In the gallery space, we’ll break our silence and be honored for our creativity, strength, and courage.

Some of us will be displaying artwork based around objects that trigger specific memories of our experiences – clothes, CDs, photographs, gifts from perpetrators, etc. For many of us, throwing out these objects can really difficult, since they evoke so much meaning, but so is having them in our homes. At the end of the night, we’ll have a massive (optional) smash-up party to get rid of these objects for good! The night will encompass a much wider range of artwork than just those pieces though, including zines, performances, and activities related to not-okay experiences with sex.

Join us on Friday, July 22 in breaking our silence!

(Please be gentle with yourself in coming to this event, as it may be triggering).

If you want to get involved, submit artwork/zines/anything, or give us your thoughts on the project, please don’t hesitate to contact us at whensexisnotokay@gmail.com.

We would *love* to have more submissions

The date for submissions is July 15, 2011
We want to emphasize that you don’t have to identify as a survivor to contribute to the night, and we are happy to display anonymous contributions.

We encourage contributions from people of all genders, ages, and experiences.

Group Art-making Session
We’re having a group art-making session for people who want to contribute from 3pm-8pm on Sunday, July 3 – please come along, we’d love to have you and support each other in making our pieces!
